Yesterday Caelin and I took part in the National Elementary Honor Society first off campus activity. We went to Marshall Home for Men in South Tucson. They had checkers and tried to get the old men to play with them, some played and others stayed to themselves. Then some of the students participated in a talent show. We had a couple of amazing piano solos, two of the boys sang a song they made up about "ebay" it was so cute, another girl played her clarinet and then sang along with some music, one boy did a couple of magic tricks, and Caelin played "Old MacDonald" on the piano. They were all fabulous, especially Caelin, I was so proud of her for doing it because she was very nervous. They then joined the men for lunch of pizza and tater tots, with chocolate pudding for dessert. Then the most entertaining for all the men was the games of horseshoe that were going on. They were cheering the kids on. At the end of our time there we were taken on a tour of the home and it is very basic and simple. They have a dining area, their rooms, and a small game/TV/weight room. Our tour guide told us that this is one of the only places that is designated for all men and it cost between $800 to $900 a month to care for them and most of the men the most they can afford is $600 so they pay that and he looks for donations and other means to make up the difference every month. Most all of the men are Veterans, from Korea, Vietnam, and World War II. Many of them have medals of honor and one of the residents did three tours in Vietnam and was awarded 6 purple hearts. He says the men are not much now but in there day they were true war heros. It was a great day for the kids and this is a really great group of kids.

AWESOME - These are the types of experiences she will always cherish about school - it's learning outside of the academic... Love her!
They are learning to serve without realizing it. That was probably the highlight of the month for those good men. Is Caelin enrolled in piano lessons? You should do it, she would be great!
